The primary
goal of the Co-operative
is to promote and sell arts and crafts produced by Members living in the Blue
Mountains.
Members are all actively involved in the Co-operative. Each Member produces
their art or craft for sale through the Co-operative and works voluntarily
two days per month minimum at The Nook Art & Craft Gallery. Each Member
also attends a minimum of six monthly meetings per year.
The Co-operative has a maximum membership set at 30 members. Currently, The
Nook has 24 memberships. Some memberships consist of two Members, forming
a Joint Membership. The number of memberships is governed by the configuration
of membership spaces within the five rooms of the shop. Each Membership pays
a monthly fee which includes a share of the current rent, and all overheads
incurred by The Nook, such as, phone, electricity, insurance, Auditor's fees,
and any incidental expenses usually incurred with the running of a commercial
business.
All Members are required to take on an additional role to assist in the running
of The Nook. These roles include Executive positions of - Directors, Secretary,
and Treasurer. Then follows a multitude of voluntary positions including Roster
Clerk, Layby Clerk, Orders Clerk, New Members' Officer, shop and kitchen supplies
co-ordinators, Publicity team, Decorating Committee, and others. Some Members
choose to take on more than one job to ensure the smooth running of The Nook.
The
History of The Nook
The Nook opened at Everglades in Wentworth Falls on the
19th of January 1996 with 12 members. It was created through the efforts of
a craft group in Wentworth Falls.
The first committee group was: Shirley Rusk, Elinor Corie, Gerard MEntee and
Wendy Fitzpatrick
The name "The Nook" was derived from the original location at Everglades,
which was the Breakfast Nook.
The initial aim of The Nook was to provide an affordable venue for the sale
and promotion of local Blue Mountains craftspeople.
The Nook moved to another room in Everglades after 2 months, and then in May
1996 moved to a room in Restoration Shop in Megalong Street in Leura. The
current location in The Mall in Leura was located in August 1996, and the
shop opened in September 1996. Full credit for this goes to Shirley Rush as
she undertook all of the necessary hard work dealing with the Blue Mountains
City Council in having the Co-operative approved.
Upon opening, the Cooperative consisted of 13 members, increasing to 30 by
the end of the following year.
Memberships were later restricted to 24 with the allocation of specific member's
spaces in 1998.
The Nook formally became a Co-operative in 1997, with the foundation meeting
held in August of that year.
Originally members paid a commission of 25% to the Co-operative for sales,
but this was changed to a fee paying system after 3 months as it was felt
to be a fairer arrangement. Consignment goods were taken in the inital year
but then ceased.
The Nook has been trading it its current location since 1996.
