avatarBlack Cockatoo Ceramics

Makes Stoneware Ceramics.

I love playing with mud. I adore the elemental aspect of ceramics: earth; water; fire.  I love that ceramics are the things that survive throughout the ages, and can be dug up thousands of years later and tell us about the past. I love using beautiful things, and am influenced by how a pot feels in the hand, is it heavy or light, smooth or rough. I love many different types of ceramics, from old Japanese Raku tea bowls to fine carved porcelain to rough textured anagama-fired platters.

My main influences are old Japanese and Korean ceramics, the beautiful simple shapes of Lucie Rie pots, the writings of Bernard Leach and the Australian environment.  I love pure, simple shapes, the clarity and depth of celadon glazes and the earthy texture of shino glazes.

I am constantly inspired by the natural environment.  This is reflected in my work by such things as sprigged shells, carved dragonflies and plant designs. This has extended recently, and I have started painting Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos and Lyrebirds on mugs and bowls.  Seeing Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos flying around a mug always brings a smile to my face.

I am very interested in many areas of ceramics, but currently make functional stoneware. I love that my pots will be used and enjoyed daily by the people that buy them.  I also hope that my pots will also inspire people to look at the natural world around them, and to realize how astonishing nature really is, and to look at the fine details in the world around them.

I have exhibited in many Sydney and Regional Galleries.
