Mary Cater – Creative Knits and Telopea Honey

Mary is a hand knitter extraordinaire.

She specialises in accessories – hats, beanies, scarves, shawls, gloves and booties for adults and children.

Natural fibres such as wool, alpaca, mohair, soy and silk are Mary’s yarns of  choice, but she will included synthetic fibres for special effects, often combining several of these fibres in one item.

As a very experienced knitter Mary prefers to knit ‘in the round’ using a circular or set of needles. This has the great advantage of producing a seemless product!

Mary’s signature items are her cute little ‘gumnut’ beanies which are popular for tiny tots.

She loves making fairisle patterned berets from Australian wools and is keen to promote Australian produced yarns.

Mary’s other love is honey which she produces under the label “Telopea Honey”.

In 2003 she was given three hives by a neighbour who was moving to Queensland, and her collection has grown to fourteen hives which she keeps in the Upper Blue Mountains and in the Lithgow area.

Most of the honey comes from the large range of eucalypts that flower in the Blue Mountains.

The honey is extracted the old-fashioned way with a hand-operated extractor and warmed slightly over warm water to aid filtering.

The end result is delicious honey that tasts how honey should taste!

A bit more about Mary.

Mary comes from a family of knitters and was taught to knit by her mother and grandmother from age five years.

Her earliest creations were for her dolls and later she helped her mother by knitting for her younger siblings.

When Mary started a family of her own, she found that knitting helped her to relax and keep her sanity intact!
